300 CHAPTER 10 Posterior Pituitary
نویسندگان
چکیده
• The posterior pituitary is neural tissue and consists only of the distal axons of the hypothalamic magnocellular neurons that make up the neurohypophysis. • The control of hormone synthesis is at the level of transcription. Stimuli for secretion of vasopressin or oxytocin also stimulate transcription and increase the messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) content in the magnocellular neurons. • The physiologic regulation of vasopressin synthesis and secretion involves two systems: osmotic and pressure/ volume. • Diabetes insipidus is a disorder of a large volume of urine (diabetes) that is hypotonic, dilute, and tasteless (insipid). • The syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH) is produced when plasma levels of arginine vasopressin (AVP) are elevated at times when the physiologic secretion of vasopressin from the posterior pituitary would normally be osmotically suppressed.

The Neurocognitive Consequences of Non-functioning Pituitary Adenoma and Its Treatment
Patients with pituitary adenoma often report problems with cognitive function. However, the current literature is inconsistent on the types of cognitive deficits that patients experience. Chapter 1 of this thesis reviews the current literature and the questions that are still unanswered concerning the cognitive function of this patient group. Chapter 2 outlines the methodology used to assess th...

This chapter explores the hypothalamo-pituitary system and provides a brief description of the principal hormones of the anterior and posterior lobes of the pituitary gland. The actions of the individual hormones are discussed in further detail in the chapters dealing with their target glands: hormonal control of the thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands is discussed in Chapter 16, hormonal c...
